Welcome to Prestwich Heritage Society
Prestwich Heritage Society was established in July 1999 following an extremely successful exhibition covering 5,000 years of Prestwich history. Prestwich Heritage Society meets at the Church Inn, a 17th. century Grade II Listed Building. The May Pole once stood in front of the Inn, the 'Wakes' celebrations were held here until Victorian times. Summary justice was also dispensed at the inn by the local magistrates who on occasion held their 'Court' here. The Society has a regular programme of events, which includes talks at the Society's base, the Church Inn, visits to galleries and libraries in Bury and Manchester and to houses with a local connection. The Society is actively involved in collecting artefacts of Prestwich these range from photographs and postcards to stone gargoyles, grotesques, stained glass windows, and objects found by archaeologists within the group. The Society has helped to promote a Heritage Trail initially around Prestwich Village and Conservation Area to draw attention to the many listed and unlisted buildings in this historic quarter.
